The new regulation is aimed at maintaining a peaceful and spiritual atmosphere around sacred shrines, especially the famous Budhanilkantha Temple, one of Nepal’s most visited Hindu pilgrimage sites. The temple is renowned for its giant reclining statue of Lord Vishnu and attracts thousands of devotees and tourists every year.
Municipal authorities said the decision was taken following concerns over increasing commercial activities near temple premises. Shops selling liquor, cigarettes, and non-vegetarian food near holy sites were seen as hurting religious sentiments and disturbing the spiritual environment.
Officials have confirmed that monitoring teams will ensure strict enforcement of the rule. Businesses located within the restricted 300-meter zone have been directed to follow the new guidelines immediately. Authorities warned that action may be taken against those violating the order.
The decision has been welcomed by devotees, religious leaders, and cultural organizations, who say the move will help protect temple traditions and preserve Nepal’s spiritual heritage. However, some local traders expressed concerns about the possible impact on their income.
Many devotees believe the new sacred zone around Budhanilkantha Temple will help maintain the purity, peace, and religious significance of one of Nepal’s most important Hindu shrines.
