Vishu is celebrated with great festive spirit that falls on the first day of the Malayalam month, Medam. It is the day when sun transits into Medam or Mesha Rashi (Aries Zodiac sign).

Having the sight of Vishu Kani is truly a moment to pause and express your gratitude and offers your prayers to Lord Krishna, in the early hours of the morning. It is a glorious moment to pray for the new beginning, prosperity and happiness in one’s life.
What is Vishu Kani?
Once the Kani is ready, the elder members gently wake up each person in the household. With their eyes closed, they are guided to the place where the Vishu Kani is arranged. Only after reaching the spot are, they asked to open their eyes and have the first darshan of Lord Sri Krishna along with the beautifully arranged Kani.
Vishu Kani is a deeply cherished tradition in which an auspicious collection of items is viewed first thing in the morning. It is believed that seeing this arrangement at the start of the day brings prosperity, abundance, and good fortune throughout the year.
Main Elements of a Traditional Vishu Kani:
- Uruli: It is a wide brass vessel in which various items are arranged for Vishu Kani. Essential items include raw rice, Kanni Vellari (golden cucumber), mango, jackfruit, coconut, as well as fruits like banana, grapes, pineapple, and pomegranate. These items symbolize abundance and nourishment.
- Valkannadi (mirror): A mirror is placed in the Vishu Kani to symbolize self-reflection and the idea of seeing oneself amidst prosperity and abundance, representing a hopeful and auspicious beginning to the new year.
- Kanikonna Flowers: The bright yellow blossoms of the Kanikonna tree (Cassia fistula) are an essential part of Vishu Kani, symbolizing prosperity, positivity, and the arrival of spring.
- Spiritual Objects: A traditional Kasavu cloth (white fabric with a gold border), a mirror, a holy book like the Bhagavad Gita, and a Kindi (metal water vessel) are placed to signify purity and devotion.
- Symbols of Wealth: Gold jewellery, coins, and currency notes are arranged to invoke financial prosperity.
- Deity: Deity of Lord Vishnu or Lord Krishna is positioned at the centre, often decorated beautifully, as the focal point of the Vishu Kani.
Vishu 2025 rituals
- Vishu Kani: Viewed at daybreak and is carefully prepared the previous night. The arrangement typically includes rice, seasonal fruits, flowers, coins, a mirror, all placed together in a brass vessel known as an Uruli and a lit traditional oil lamp (Nilavilakku).
- First sight: Family members wake up with closed eyes and view the Vishu Kani first for good luck and prosperity.
- Ramayana reading: Verses from the Ramayana are recited after viewing the Kani.
- Vishu Paddakam: Bursting of firecrackers follows as part of the celebrations.
- Vishu Sadya: A grand vegetarian feast served on banana leaves featuring 20–30 dishes like Aviyal, Thoran, Rasam, Payasam, and more.
- Vishu Kaineettam: Elders gift money or tokens of prosperity to younger family members as blessings.
Important Temples for Vishu Kani Darshan:
- Guruvayur Sri Krishna Temple: This temple is famous for its beautifully arranged Vishu Kani, which includes Kanikkonna flowers, gold ornaments, fruits, and traditional oil lamps, creating a spiritually uplifting sight.
- Aranmula Parthasarathy Temple: This temple is unique for incorporating the sacred Aranmula mirror into its Vishu Kani arrangement, adding a distinct cultural significance to the ritual.
- Sabarimala Sri Dharma Sastha Temple: Devotees gather here early in the morning for the special Vishu Kani darshan, which usually begins around 4 AM inside the sanctum.
- Sri Padmanabhaswamy Temple: One of the most prominent temples in Kerala, it attracts large numbers of devotees who come to witness the auspicious first view of the Vishu Kani.
- Kulathupuzha Sri Bala Sastha Temple: A traditional temple where early morning Vishu Kani darshan is an important ritual observed with devotion.
