Sri Vijayadurga Temple, Betki

Located in the village of Keri, Betki or Betqui, Ponda Taluka, Goa, the Sri Vijayadurga Temple is a sacred place that reflects Goa’s enduring spiritual traditions and harmonious cultural heritage.

The serene atmosphere welcomes devotees from nearby as well as far and wide, to experience the sacred harmony, spiritual vibrancy, elegant architectural style that preserve a rich legacy of faith.

In her fierce form, she defeated all the demons and came to be known as Vijaya, and thereafter as Vijayadurga. Thus, the Vijayadurga Devi worshiped here is the powerful form of Durga Devi.

Saraswat Brahmins who migrated the Deity from Sancoale halted at the Madhava Temple in Anapur. They decided to build the temple on the banks of the river Zuari, or Aghanashini. But the divine voice of the Mata Vijayadurga said that the Deity must be shifted to Keri.

Vijayadurga temple at Keri was built in the year 1560. Mandan was built in 1797 and Nagarkhana in 1819.

Garbhagriha (Sanctum): It houses the revered Deity of Goddess Vijayadurga, representing her powerful yet benevolent form.

Sabha Mandap and Madhyamandap: These spacious halls reflect elements of traditional Goan temple design. The use of rounded pillars and open interiors allows good airflow and creates a comfortable environment for prayer and meditation.

Shikhara (Spire): The temple’s roofscape has a distinctive arrangement of pyramidal roof forms, complemented by a central dome-like structure, giving the temple its characteristic appearance.

Pradakshina Patha: It is a wide passage provided for devotees to perform pradakshina, or circumambulation, both within the main structure and along its exterior.

Shibikotasav: It is a special fortnightly celebration held regularly on the day of Dashami at 8:30 PM.

Ram Navaratri & Ram Janmotsav: Nine days grand celebrations of Kirtan leading up to celebrations on Chaitra Navami.

Vardhapan Utsav: It is a temple’s anniversary celebration observed on Vaishakh Ashtami and Navami.

Mahashivaratri: It is celebrated with special prayers, rituals, and festive devotion.

Goa Yatra

By Air: The most convenient airport options are Dabolim Airport, about 150 km from the temple, and Ratnagiri Airport, about 100 km away.

By Railway: The nearest railway stations are Kudal Railway Station, approximately 35 km from the temple, or Sindhudurg Railway Station, around 45 km away.

By Road: From Mumbai, the temple is about 400 km away and typically takes 8–10 hours to reach by road. Drive along NH 66, the Mumbai–Goa highway, via Alibaug and Ratnagiri towards Vijaydurg. From Goa, the temple is approximately 150 km away. Take NH 66 southwards, passing through Malvan before reaching Vijaydurg.
