Sri Damodar Temple, Zambaulim

Nestled in the tranquil village of Zambaulim in South Goa, Bharat, Sri Damodar Temple is one of the region’s most visited pilgrimage sites, drawing devotees from far and wide for the darshan of Sri Damodar.

Located on the banks of river Kushawati, is a beautiful place to visit. A visit here feels like stepping into a bygone era, where ancient traditions and timeless spirituality continue to thrive.

The presiding Deity of the temple is Lord Shiva, who is worshipped here as Sri Damodar. It is an important place of worship for the Gowda Saraswath Brahmin (GSB) community.

The Prabhudesais are the traditional Mahajans of the Sri Damodar Temple.

The temple’s major highlight is its beautifully adorned walls and pillars, which feature intricate carvings and inscriptions from the Bhagavad Gita. Some pillars vividly depict scenes from the Mahabharata, while others are embellished with paintings of various other deities, adding to the temple’s rich artistic and spiritual appeal.

Sri Damodar is worshiped as the Grama Devata (village deity) of Loliem and holds an important place in the village’s spiritual heritage. The temple follows the traditions and guidelines of the Gokarna Partagali Jeevottam Mutt.

Venkateshwara Swamy is also worshipped within the temple premises. The Deity was installed in 1910, and a Saligrama Shila is placed before the Deity and worshipped with great devotion.

Inside the temple premises, there is also beautiful Tulsi Vrindavana, where Tulsi Devi is worshiped with faith and devotion.

For devotees interested in experiencing the temple’s festive atmosphere, March is particularly significant as the temple celebrates Shigmo (Gulalotsav) with traditional festivities and the vibrant use of colours.

For a peaceful spiritual experience, early morning or evening is a good time to visit. The temple is situated beside the Kushavati River, adding to the serene atmosphere of the pilgrimage.

Quepem: It is located close to Zambaulim, Quepem is a convenient stop for exploring the cultural heritage and surroundings of South Goa.

Sri Mahalakshmi Temple: It is a nearby temple in Zambaulim, where Mahalakshmi is worshiped.

By Air: Dabolim Airport (60 km away), and Mopa Airport (70 km away) are the nearest airports to reach the temple.

By Railway: Margao Railway Station (22 km), and Balli Railway Station (10 km) are the nearest railway stations to reach the temple.

By Road: The temple is about 22 km from Margao and can be reached via NH 66, followed by the road towards Zambaulim/Quepem. Local buses, taxis, and private vehicles provide convenient access to the temple.
