Sri Parashuram Temple, Poinguinim, is one of Goa’s most significant and rare temples dedicated to Bhagwan Parashurama, the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Bhagwan Parashurama is greatly honored as the creator of this Gomantak kshetra by reclaiming Konkan coast from the sea.
Sri Parashuram Temple is located amidst the lust green forest of Poinguinim village in the Canacona region of South Goa, Bharat.
Sri Parashuram Temple is regarded as one of the Ekadasha Tirthas of Goa, the eleven sacred pilgrimage sites of the region. The presiding Deity of Bhagwan Parashurama is enshrined in the Garbhagriha of the temple. The Deity is depicted in a standing posture, holding a parashu (axe) and a bow, symbolising his divine strength and warrior-sage nature.
Sthala Purana of Sri Parashuram Temple
According to Vedic tradition, Bhagwan Parashurama, an avatar of Maha Vishnu, completed his earthly mission and sought a sacred land where he could meditate and perform worship. For this purpose, he stood upon the Sahyadri Parvata and cast his axe into the Arabian Sea. As the waters receded, a new stretch of land emerged along the western coast. This land came to be known as Parashurama Srishti and is traditionally associated with the Konkan, Canara and Kerala coastal regions.
However, the newly created land was salty and unsuitable for human habitation. Bhagwan Parashurama therefore sought the help of Naga King Vasuki, who sanctified and sweetened the land with his sacred venom, making it suitable for settlement and cultivation.
Architecture of Sri Parashuram Temple
Sri Parashuram Temple at Poinguinim is a fine example of traditional Goan temple architecture. The temple features a distinctive pyramid-shaped shikhara, intricately carved wooden pillars in the Sabhamandapa, and a sacred Pushkarini (temple pond), reflecting the region’s rich architectural and spiritual heritage.
The temple complex consists of two separate structures that appear as a single structure: the main one dedicated to Bhagwan Parashurama and another one dedicated to Sri Purushottama Deva.
The sacred complex is adorned with depictions of Kshetrapala, revered as the guardian of the temple.
Festivals Celebrated at Sri Parashuram Temple
Bhagwan Parshuram Jayanti: It is one of the grandest festival celebrations of the region that takes place in the month of April. During the festive season, long procession takes place through three villages. Cultural programmes like Chakri Kirtan are also conducted.
Shikhar Kalash Anniversary: The anniversary commemorates the sacred installation of the temple’s shikhara kalash and is marked by special religious rituals, prayers, and community feasts.
