Continuous rainfall in the Sahyadri Hills has caused mudslides, falling rocks, and severe damage to the Manchar–Bhimashankar and Rajgurunagar (Khed)–Bhimashankar roads. Following the damage, authorities have suspended vehicular movement on both routes to ensure public safety.
Officials from the Pune district administration, the Public Works Department (PWD), and disaster response teams have begun clearing debris and assessing the damaged stretches. However, repair work is progressing cautiously due to intermittent rainfall and the possibility of fresh landslides.
The road closures come just ahead of the holy month of Shravan, when thousands of Shiva devotees undertake the pilgrimage to Bhimashankar Temple. Authorities have urged pilgrims not to attempt alternate village or forest routes, as these too remain vulnerable to landslides and flash floods during the ongoing monsoon.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected to continue across parts of Maharashtra, including Pune district, increasing the risk of further weather-related disruptions.
Nestled in the scenic Sahyadri Hills within the Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary, the ancient temple is one of India’s most revered Jyotirlingas and attracts lakhs of devotees every year, particularly during Shravan and Mahashivratri. Devotees are advised to monitor official travel advisories before planning their pilgrimage.
