Thiruvarur, Tamil Nadu (March 2026): The world-famous Thiruvarur Aazhi Ther 2026 is set to be celebrated with grandeur at the Sri Thyagarajaswamy Temple, attracting thousands of devotees for one of Asia’s largest temple chariot festivals.
Festival Dates – 2026
- Night of March 28, 2026 (Saturday): Lord Thyagaraja Swamy will move from Yathasthanam to the Aazhi Ther via Vittavasal performing the sacred Ajaba Nadanam ritual at around 7:00 PM.
- Main Chariot Festival – March 29, 2026 (Sunday): The Therottam (chariot procession) of five deities will take place throughout the day.
Therottam Timings
- 5:00–6:00 AM: Chariots of Sri Vinayagar and Sri Subramanyar will be pulled first.
- Morning: Sri Thyagaraja Swamy Aazhi Ther begins with traditional Vadam Pidithal (holding the ropes).
- Around 11:00 AM: Sri Nilotpalamba Ambal ThiruTher procession commences.
- Around 1:00 PM: Sri Chandikeshwarar Thiruther will be pulled.
- Evening (6:00–7:00 PM): Both Aazhi Ther and Ambal Ther are expected to reach their designated resting point (Nilai).
Devotees enthusiastically chant “Arura… Thyagesa…” while pulling the massive chariots.

- Considered Asia’s largest temple car, standing 96 feet tall and weighing around 300 tonnes.
- Pulled by thousands of devotees, creating a spectacular visual of faith and devotion.
- Traditionally celebrated on the Ayilyam star day in the Tamil month of Panguni.
