Yes, it is Puri’s world-famous Jagannath Rath Yatra. Every year, millions of devotees from across India and around the world gather in Puri to witness this magnificent festival and seek the divine darshan of Lord Jagannath along with His siblings, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra. During the festival, the divine
Trinity travels in Their majestic wooden chariots, blessing countless devotees along the Grand Road (Bada Danda).
For every devotee, watching the Lord ascend His chariot is an unforgettable and deeply emotional moment. Tears of devotion fill their eyes as chants of “Jai Jagannath” and “Hari Bol” echo through the streets of Puri.
There is a widespread criticism that the rituals in the Jagannath Temple are often delayed and there is no fixed time for the rituals. “Everything happens according to the will of Lord Jagannath” – temple servitors say this. This led to the misconception among the people that temple servitors are not performing their duty accordingly.
To address these concerns, the Odisha Government in 1972 introduced strict instructions to ensure that all rituals were completed on time.
On the day of the Rath Yatra, every ritual was performed according to the fixed schedule forcibly. However, according to a popular traditional account, the then Chief Minister of Odisha, Nandini Satpathy, reportedly had an urgent political engagement and needed to catch a flight. It is believed that instructions were given to expedite the rituals.
It was a custom, that the Chief Minister of Odisha should first pay obeisance to Lord in chariot and then leave.
In the haste to complete the ceremonies quickly, some customary rituals were allegedly shortened or omitted. This displeased Lord Jagannath, who would not permit Himself to be moved onto the chariot.
The Day Lord Jagannath Refused to Mount His Chariot
But when it was Lord Jagannath’s turn, something unexpected happened.
Despite repeated efforts by the temple servitors, the Lord could not be moved onto His chariot. It appeared as though He had refused to mount the chariot.
Soon afterward, an unusual thunderstorm accompanied by heavy rain lashed Puri in the middle of the day. Temple servitors, officials, and devotees became anxious and began praying earnestly, seeking forgiveness if any mistake had been committed during the rituals.
Though the temple servitors tried all their possible ways. They tried for minutes, and hours but could not even move an inch. Their effort from morning 7 AM to 5 PM were wasted. Since the Lord was supposed to reach the Gundicha Temple same evening.
Neither the temple administration nor the servitors could resolve the situation. Finally, the matter was brought before the Gajapati Maharaja.
The King’s Humble Prayer
With folded hands and deep devotion, he first offered prayers to Lord Balabhadra, then to Devi Subhadra, and finally approached Lord Jagannath.
The king kneeling down touched the lotus feet of Lord Jagannath. With tears in his eyes, he sincerely begged the Lord to forgive any mistakes committed by His servants or the temple administration.
Moved by the king’s complete humility, surrender, and devotion, Lord Jagannath is believed to have accepted the prayers. Soon afterward, He was effortlessly seated on His chariot, allowing the Rath Yatra to proceed.
The Spiritual Message
Only sincere devotion, humility, and complete surrender can earn the grace of Lord Jagannath.
For devotees, this event serves as a reminder that Lord Jagannath is not merely a wooden deity but a living manifestation of the Supreme Lord. Through His compassionate lotus eyes, He witnesses every action, accepts genuine devotion, and lovingly guides His devotees.
