In a landmark step towards the preservation and cleanliness of India’s sacred pilgrimage sites, Tirtha Yatra proudly launches the “Swaccha Tirtha Abhiyan” Campaign, a first of its kind initiative dedicated to restoring the sanctity, cleanliness, and environmental sustainability of revered Dhams and pilgrimage destinations throughout the country.
Tirtha Yatra is the world’s largest Temple Tour Operator brand established in 2016, owned by The Agrani Hospitality Private Limited, headquartered in Bengaluru, Bharat. Tirtha Yatra is known for revolutionising the Temple Tourism Industry. This historic campaign marks a significant milestone in the organization’s journey of serving spiritual communities and safeguarding the cultural heritage that has inspired millions of devotees for a decade.
A Vision Rooted in Devotion and Responsibility
Pilgrimage sites are not merely destinations; they are living symbols of faith, spirituality, and cultural identity. Over time, increasing footfall, environmental challenges, and inadequate waste management have contributed to the accumulation of dust, litter, and pollutants around many sacred locations.
Recognizing the urgent need for collective action, the Tirtha Yatra Organization has undertaken the Free Dhams from Dust or Swaccha Tirtha Campaign with a vision to create cleaner, healthier, and more welcoming environments for pilgrims while preserving the dignity of these revered places.
Objectives of the Campaign
The initiative focuses on several key objectives:
- Enhancing cleanliness and hygiene across major pilgrimage destinations.
- Reducing dust pollution and environmental degradation in and around temple precincts and public spaces.
- Promoting sustainable waste management practices among pilgrims, local communities, and stakeholders.
- Encouraging volunteer participation in cleanliness drives and awareness programs on responsible management of pilgrimages.
How the Campaign Has Been Planned
The Free Dhams from Dust Campaign has been planned in a simple, practical, and effective manner so that every yatri can participate easily.
At the beginning of the yatra, each yatri or pilgrim will be provided with a biodegradable cover or carry bag by Tirtha Yatra Coordination Team. This bag will be given with clear instructions on how it should be used during the journey.
Throughout the yatra, pilgrims will be encouraged to collect their personal dry waste in this bag. This may include food wrappers, paper pieces, used tissues, packets, small disposable items, and other waste generated during travel.
Instead of throwing waste on roads, near temples, around sacred rivers, outside rooms, or along pilgrimage routes, yatri’s will be requested to keep the waste safely inside the biodegradable bag. This ensures that sacred spaces remain clean and free from unnecessary litter.
At the conclusion of the yatra, while checking out from their respective rooms or hotels, yatri’s will be guided to dispose their collected waste in the designated waste disposal area at the hotel. This planned disposal process will help prevent littering in and around sacred places and will support better waste management.
This simple practice creates a strong message to all: “Carry devotion in the heart and responsibility in action.”
Environmental and Social Impact
By addressing dust accumulation, waste disposal challenges, and environmental concerns, the campaign is expected to deliver multiple benefits:
- Improved cleanliness and aesthetic appeal of pilgrimage sites.
- Enhanced health and safety conditions for visitors and local communities.
- Increased environmental awareness among pilgrims.
- Strengthened community engagement and volunteerism.
- Encouraging the usage of Bio-Degradable disposable items.
- Disciplined approach to Eco Sensitive Zones during the pilgrimage.
- Sustainable preservation of sacred and cultural landmarks.
- Living the principle of “Cleanliness is equal to Godliness.”
A Call to Action
The Tirtha Yatra Organization invites devotees, community members, institutions, and stakeholders to become active partners in this historic mission. The Swaccha Tirtha Abhiyan Campaign will help protect the purity of temples, Dhams, sacred rivers, pilgrimage routes, eco sensitive zones and accommodation spaces. Cleaner surroundings will improve the spiritual experience of yatri’s and will also reduce the burden on local communities and cleaning staff.
By promoting biodegradable carry bags, the initiative also supports environmental responsibility. It encourages pilgrims to avoid careless disposal of waste and to adopt sustainable practices during their journey.
Our Message to Every Yatri
Let every step of the yatra be pure.
Let every sacred place remain clean.
Let every pilgrim become a guardian of the Tirtha Kshetra.
The Swaccha Tirtha Abhiyan Campaign is more than a cleanliness drive; it is a movement dedicated to honoring our spiritual heritage through responsible action and environmental consciousness.
