This sacred site is located in Pithapuram, Kakinada district of Andhra Pradesh. It is the 10th shakti peetha as described in Sri Shankaracharya’s Ashtadasha Shakti Peetha Stotra.
It is the sacred site where the left hand of Sati Devi fell. Hence, it is considered the Maha Shakti Peetha.
Sri Puruhutika Devi Temple is located inside the temple complex of Kukkuteswara Swamy Temple.

Pithapuram Shakti Peetha is one of the Trigaya Kshetras
Gayasura’s body extended in three places: first, the head is located at Sirogaya in Bihar; second, the navel at Jajpur in Odisha; and third, the feet at Paadagaya in Pithapuram.
At these sacred places, offering pindas to departed souls is believed to grant them moksha (liberation).
Sthala Purana of Sri Puruhutika Devi Temple
Indra, filled with shame and guilt, pleaded Sage Maharishi Gautama to free him from the curse. Eventually, the sage took pity on him and transformed yonis into eyes. Thus, Indra was named ‘Sahasraksha’, the one with a thousand eyes.
He left Indraloka and travelled to Pithika Puri to please Jaganmata to regain his testicles. Pleased by his prayer, the goddess blessed him. Indra was overjoyed and worshiped the goddess as Puruhutika Devi.
Architecture of Sri Puruhutika Devi Temple
Lord Kukkuteshwara is worshiped in the form of Spatika lingam and is swayuambhu. In front of the Shiva linga, there is Eka-shila Nandi. This is the second largest in size when compared to the one in the Lepakshi temple.
This temple follows the South Indian style of architecture, featuring gopuram, vimanams, and temple tanks. The temple is built in the Dravidian style of architecture.
Once you enter the temple through the main entrance, there is a dwajastambha. If you go ahead, you can find the temple of Kukkuteshwara. Towards the right side, there is a temple dedicated to Puruhutika Devi.
Inside this vast temple complex, there is a stone that has the feet of Gayasura engraved on it.
