Located nearly 35 km away from Meerut, this is located on the banks of river Ganga. During the Mahabharata era, Hastinapur was a prosperous and magnificent city. Ancient texts refer to it by several names, including Gajapura, Nagapura, Brahmasthala, and Punjarapura.
The name Hastinapur is derived from the Sanskrit words Hasti (elephant) and Pura (city), meaning “City of Elephants.” According to another tradition, the city was established after King Hasti, the legendary founder of the Kuru dynasty’s capital. He was the ancestors of Kauravas and Pandavas. Hence, this town as named Hastinapur.
This sacred land was the capital of the Kuru dynasty, ruled by the Kauravas. Following the Mahabharata war, the Pandavas ruled Hastinapur for 36 years. The great Mahabharata war was fought over the throne (Simhasana) of Hastinapur, making this city the focal point of one of the greatest conflicts in Indian history.
Hastinapur is traditionally believed to be the birthplace and childhood home of both the Kauravas and the Pandavas. It also stands as the sacred land where Bhishma took his legendary vow (Bhishma Pratigya), a pledge that forever changed the destiny of the Kuru dynasty. Another defining event in the Mahabharata took place in the royal palace of Hastinapur—the infamous game of dice between Yudhishthira and Duryodhana, which ultimately led to the exile of the Pandavas and set the stage for the Kurukshetra war.
Today, the site where the ancient royal palace of Hastinapur once stood is believed to be covered by dense forest, preserving the memories of its glorious past beneath the earth.
Hastinapur is also regarded as a place of immense spiritual significance. According to local belief, taking a holy bath in the sacred well located here is believed to help relieve skin ailments and bestow divine blessings upon devotees.
Even today, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) continues excavation work in Hastinapur. Several ancient temples, artifacts, and archaeological remains have been unearthed, providing valuable insights into its glorious past.

Karna Temple: It is an ancient temple built by Karna, who is known for his generosity and valour. There is a Shiva Linga inside the temple, which was established by Karna himself. It is at this place that Karna worshiped the Sun God and performed the act of charity. In ancient times, there was the Ganga River flowing nearby. Karna, after taking a bath in Ganga, would perform charity for those who come in need. Though the temple is small, it is known for fulfilling all the good wishes of devotees.
Draupadi Ghat: It is situated on the banks of the river Ganga. This place is associated with Draupadi, the wife of Pandavas. Devotees from nearby as well as faraway places visit this place to take a holy dip in the sacred waters and offer their prayers. Besides this, there is a small temple built for Lord Shiva, worshiped in the form of Shiva Linga. Goddess Draupadi would offer her daily prayers to Lord Shiva after taking bath in the river Ganga.
Vidur Ka Tila: This is the place where Vidur, the wise minister of Kuru Kingdom resided. He effectively guided the kings of Hastinapur in running the administration.
Meerut: It is located about 40 km from Hastinapur, Meerut is known for attractions such as the Augarnath Temple, making it a worthwhile excursion for visitors.
How to Reach Hastinapur
By Air: The nearest airport is Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL), New Delhi, located approximately 120 km from Hastinapur. From the airport, visitors can hire a taxi or take a bus to reach the town.
By Rail: The nearest major railway station is Meerut City Junction, about 35–40 km from Hastinapur. Taxis, autorickshaws, and local buses are readily available from the station.
By Road: Hastinapur is well connected by road to major cities in Uttar Pradesh and the Delhi NCR region. It is approximately 120 km from Delhi, 40 km from Meerut, and 150 km from Dehradun. Regular state-run and private buses operate from Delhi, Meerut, and nearby cities, while taxis and self-drive vehicles offer a convenient travel option.
