Observed on Jyeshtha Shukla Dashami, Ganga Dussehra commemorates the sacred descent of Goddess Ganga from heaven to earth. The festival holds immense significance in Hindu tradition, with devotees believing that a holy dip in sacred waters on this day helps cleanse sins and bestows divine blessings.
From the early hours of the morning, devotees gathered at rivers, temple tanks, and pilgrimage centres to perform ritual baths and offer prayers. Temples organized special pujas, abhishekams, bhajans, and spiritual discourses, highlighting the importance of the occasion and the legend of King Bhagiratha, whose penance brought the celestial river to earth.
Many devotees also observed Deepa Daan, offering lighted lamps to rivers and water bodies as a mark of reverence to Goddess Ganga. Charitable activities such as annadanam, distribution of drinking water, clothes, and essential items to the needy were carried out at several locations.
According to Hindu scriptures, Ganga Dussehra symbolizes the removal of ten types of sins, making it one of the most auspicious festivals dedicated to the holy river. The celebrations concluded with prayers for peace, prosperity, good health, and the welfare of humanity.
The annual observance continues to attract large numbers of devotees, reflecting the enduring spiritual significance of the sacred River Ganga in Hindu culture and tradition.
