Nammalvar, revered as the foremost among the twelve Alwar poet-saints of Sri Vaishnavism, is celebrated for his profound devotion to Lord Vishnu and his invaluable contribution to Tamil devotional literature.
Special celebrations are being held at major Vishnu temples, particularly at the Sri Adinatha Swamy Temple in Alwarthirunagari, also known as Thirukkurugur, in the Thoothukudi district of Tamil Nadu, which is regarded as the birthplace of Nammalvar.
The celebrations at the Sri Adinatha Swamy Temple begin with a special Thirumanjanam (sacred bath) for Nammalvar, followed by the recitation of the Divya Prabandham, particularly the Tiruvaymoli. The saint’s deity is beautifully adorned with flowers, silk garments, and traditional ornaments before being taken in a grand Pallakku (palanquin) procession through the temple streets. The festivities conclude with Satrumurai, a ceremonial recitation of sacred hymns and special honours to Nammalvar.
Thousands of devotees have gathered since the early hours of the day to participate in the sacred observances and seek the blessings of the revered Alwar saint. Special discourses, devotional programmes, and cultural events highlighting Nammalvar’s life, teachings, and literary legacy are also being conducted at temples and religious centres, drawing the participation of devotees and scholars alike.
Temple authorities have made elaborate arrangements to manage the large influx of devotees and ensure the smooth conduct of the celebrations. The hymns and teachings of Nammalvar continue to inspire millions of Sri Vaishnava devotees across India and around the world.
