Eka Veera Temple, Mahur

Eka Veera Temple is a powerful Tantrik Shakti Peetha, located in lush green Heure village in Mahur, Nanded district, Maharashtra. It is one of the Ashtadasha Shakti Peethas, nestled on the banks of Pen Ganga or Pancha Ganga River. With its timeless charm, spiritual power, fresh mountain air, and tranquility, this sacred site attracts a huge number of devotees.

The main Deity of the temple is Eka Veera, also known as Eka Veerika Devi. It is a sacred site where the head of Sati Devi fell. Devotees worship Eka Veera Devi to bring overall well-being, prosperity, and happiness. She wards off all the evil and also enhances the spiritual aura of the devotees.

Eka Veera Temple is a very small temple, which has only one hall. Inside the garbha griha, only the head of the Deity is worshiped here. This Shakti Peetha is quite unknown to most of the people. According to Adi Shankaracharya’s Ashtadasha Shakti Peetha Stotra, Eka Veera Devi is the eighth among the eighteen Shakti’s or Devi’s. This phrase, “Mahurye ekaveerika,” has been mentioned in the stotra.

Sthala Purana of Eka Veera Temple, Mahur

According to history, Renuka Devi is the virtuous woman who was born into a royal lineage as a daughter of King Renu of Kubaj. She was not delivered from the womb, qualifying for the title Ayonija. Since she emerged from the sacred fire, she was called Agnija.

Upon reaching the marriageable age, she was married to Sage Jamadagni. She lived in a hermitage, adhering to the strict rules of the ashrama. She is best known as the mother of Lord Parashurama.

Once she got distracted and lost her yogic abilities. Enraged by this, Sage Jamadagni ordered his son Parashurama to behead her. Unwillingly, Parashurma carried out the task as per the father’s order.

Sage Jamadagni was pleased with the devotion and obedience of his son Parashurama and hence granted him a boon. Being grief-stricken, Parashurama only asked for the life of his mother.

After gaining life, she took the form of Eka Veerika Devi and dwelled in Mahurya Village as a fierce form, protecting the devotees from evil forces.

The place where Eka Veera Devi manifested on the Mahur hill, is revered as the one of the most powerful center for worship in Maharashtra.

Architecture of Eka Veera Temple, Mahur

Eka Veera Temple was built by the Yadava King of Devagiri approximately 800 years ago. The architecture of the temple is simple yet appealing. It comprises only one hall and the Garbhagriha. Inside the Garbhagriha, only the head of Renuka Devi is worshiped as Eka Veerika Mata, while her body is worshiped at the nearby Renuka Devi Temple. There are carved caves and other sacred sites that enhance the spiritual aura of the place.

Dasara: This festival is celebrated with great fervor; nine forms of Durga Devi are worshiped. It is observed in the month of Ashwaja (September-October).

Datta Jayanti: This festival holds great religious importance for the people of Mahur. Also known as Datta Purnima, there is a huge rush of devotees to enjoy the Jhulan Utsava of Lord Dattatreya.
