After several temples in South India introduced traditional dress rules, Odisha may soon implement a similar Puri Jagannath Temple dress code at the sacred Puri Shri Mandira. The proposal has triggered nationwide discussions on temple traditions and modern attire.
The Odisha State Law Commission has recommended a formal dress code for devotees visiting the temple dedicated to Lord Jagannath. As per the proposal, women wearing jeans, shirts, or western outfits may be restricted from entering the temple premises. Instead, traditional attire such as saree or salwar-kameez is encouraged.

According to the recommendations, all attire within the temple should align with Hindu cultural values. Sevaks and priests must wear traditional clothing while on duty. Women above 10 years are advised to wear saree or salwar-kameez, while girls can wear frocks or gowns.
