History of Jagat Shiromani Temple
The Jagat Shiromani Temple was constructed by Rani Kanakwati (Kanakavati), the wife of Raja Man Singh I, one of the most celebrated rulers of the Kachwaha Rajput dynasty of Amer. Construction of the temple began around 1599 CE and was completed in 1608 CE. The temple’s name, “Jagat Shiromani,” meaning “the crest Jewel of the Universe.”
Raja Man Singh I was one of Akbar’s most trusted generals and played a significant role in expanding and strengthening the Mughal Empire. Despite close ties with the Mughal court, the Kachwaha rulers remained patrons of Sanatana culture, religion, and architecture. The Jagat Shiromani Temple stands as a lasting symbol of this patronage and reflects the prosperity enjoyed by Amer.
Over the centuries, the temple has survived political changes, invasions, and the passage of time, retaining much of its original grandeur and spiritual significance.
Connection with Meera Bai
One of the most fascinating aspects of Jagat Shiromani Temple is its association with Bhaktimati Meera Bai. When Meera bai was a small out of curiosity she asked her mother who is her husband, so her mother pointed to Krishna in her temple and replied that he is your husband, then little Meera accepted the same and started to behave as wife and made ghoonghat (as married women used to veil her in front of husband), and also behave accordingly, she was also going to listen Bhagwat katha (Krishna katha) with mother and grandfather many times, and also remember her previous life as Madhavi, and cry.
Once so happened a sage brought a deity with him, which was so beautiful and lively that made her remember her previous life completely, so she started to cry and asked the sage to give her the deity of Giridhar Gopal, but at that time as the sage was doing seva for Sri Krishna he politely declined, but then little Meera bai offered prayers to Giridhar Gopal to come to him, and went for hunger strike that if Giridhar Gopal does not comes to her she will not stop the hunger strike, on the same day the sage got a dream, as to give the deity to Meera bai as an order of Sri Krishna the sage in remorse gave the deity of Giridhar Gopal to Meera bai, which later was known as Meera’s Giridhar Gopal and later this deity was placed in Amer and became to be known as Jagat Shiromani (The Crown Jewel of the Universe).
Due to this Meera Bai is revered across India for her unwavering love and devotion to Bhagwan Krishna and her devotional compositions that continue to inspire millions. According to local tradition, the temple houses the vigraha of Bhagwan Krishna that Meera Bai worshipped in Mewar. During times of political unrest and threats, the deity was reportedly moved from Mewar to Amer for protection. It was later consecrated in this kshetra and came to be known as Jagat Shiromani Temple.
