The Sri Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) is supervising the restoration and development activities at Gundicha Temple, with senior officials conducting regular inspections to monitor progress. SJTA Chief Administrator Arabinda Padhee recently reviewed the ongoing conservation work and assessed improvements being carried out across the temple complex.
Traditional Architecture Guides Gundicha Temple Renovation Work
Several important sections of Gundicha Temple, including Tunia Mahal, Ballav Ghar, and portions of Rosha Shala, are being renovated in line with traditional Odia Kalinga architectural practices. Authorities have also completed restoration of the northern entrance, while additional work continues on Khondalite stone cladding, landscaping, and dome repairs near the Nrusingha Temple area.
These efforts are intended to retain the historic and cultural character of the temple while ensuring long-term preservation of its architectural heritage.
Structural Repairs and Saradhabali Development Progress
Alongside beautification works, damaged courtyard stones are being replaced and structural elements such as beams and doors are undergoing repairs to improve durability and safety. Development initiatives are also progressing at Saradhabali, which serves as one of the largest congregation points during Ratha Yatra 2026 and attracts massive crowds of devotees visiting Puri.
Temple Reopening Plans and Devotee Management SOP
Officials have stated that Gundicha Temple will reopen for general devotees after the completion of the Ratha Yatra 2026 festival celebrations. A dedicated Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) is being prepared to support smooth visitor management, efficient temple operations, and continued heritage conservation.
The restoration reflects a thoughtful approach to safeguarding spiritual heritage while preparing for the influx of devotees for Ratha Yatra 2026 in Puri.
With Ratha Yatra 2026 approaching, the renovated Gundicha Temple is set to offer enhanced facilities while preserving its sacred heritage and enriching the spiritual experience of devotees visiting Puri.
