Attukal Pongala is one of the largest gatherings of women for a religious event, earning a place in the Guinness World Records. The festival is dedicated to Goddess Attukal Amma, believed to be an incarnation of Kannaki, symbolising devotion, strength, and divine grace.
The Pongala ritual involves women preparing a sweet offering made of rice, jaggery, coconut, and ghee in earthen pots. Temporary hearths will line the streets across several kilometres surrounding the temple premises, transforming the city into a sea of devotion and unity.
The ceremonial lighting of the hearth (Pandara Aduppu) by the chief priest inside the temple marks the beginning of the ritual. Once the sacred fire is lit, it is symbolically passed on to the devotees, who begin cooking their Pongala offering. The ritual concludes with the priest sprinkling holy water and declaring the offering complete.
Authorities have made elaborate arrangements to manage the massive crowd, including traffic diversions, medical aid camps, drinking water facilities, and security measures to ensure a smooth and safe celebration.
Devotees and visitors have been advised to follow official guidelines and cooperate with authorities for the successful conduct of the festival.
