Mahakali Temple, Ujjain

Mahakali Temple in Ujjain is the most prominent Shakti Peetha dedicated to the worship of the powerful goddess Mahakali. She is the guardian of the oldest city, Ujjain. Fierce goddess, Mahakali, protects her devotees from evil, ignorance, and fear.

It is the tantrik shakti peetha, and is also called Siddha Peetha, where spiritual seekers from far places come to this sacred place to attain spiritual sadhanas.

It is the 9th Shakti Peetha among the Ashtadasha Shakti Peethas, as described by Sri Adi Guru Shankaracharya in his Ashtadasha Shakti Peetha Stotra. It is the place where the upper lip of Sati Devi fell.

Ujjain Mahakali Temple is known by several names, including Gadkalika Temple, Garh Kalika Temple, and more. It is located near the Bhartrihari Caves in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh.

Lord Mahakal resides beside the Mahakali Shakti Peetha, thus harmoniously balancing the cosmic energies of creation and destruction. Ujjain, one of the Sapta Moksha Puri’s, stands as a sacred site where the divine energies of Shiva and Shakti unite.

Mahakali worshiped here is also known as Raktadantika or Chamunda.

The Deity of Mahakali is a powerful and fierce goddess. Only the head of the goddess is worshipped. She is adorned with sindoor, which symbolizes power, protection, and auspicious energy. Her tongue is seen protruding outside, her urge to drink the blood of a demon named Raktabija to save the world.

Head of the goddess is adorned with a silver crown. She is draped in a red or orange color saree. She is always adorned with a fresh garland of flowers.

Once upon a time in the ancient city of Avantika, there lived a foolish and uneducated shepherd, Kalidasa. He was always mocked for his ignorance by the villagers. Heartbroken, Kalidasa ran towards the Gadkalika Temple and fell at the feet of Maa Mahakali. With tears rolling down from his eyes, he prayed for wisdom.

Goddess Mahakali was extremely pleased by his innocence and true devotion. She appeared before him and was blessed with immense knowledge, extraordinary wisdom, and poetic brilliance.

He was then called Kalidasa, meaning “a servant of Mahakali”. After receiving her blessings, he went on to become one of the greatest poets and playwrights of all time. His works are revered even today.

Kumarasambhavam and Raghuvaṃsa are classical Sanskrit mahakavyas, and many other famous works by Kalidasa include Meghaduta and Abhijnanasakuntalam.

Kalidasa’s life is a true example of how sincere prayers and humility can transform one’s life from weakness to strength. It shows that only true devotion can attract the divine grace of Mother Maha Kali.

King Vikramaditya is the famous ruler of Ujjain who was an ardent devotee of Mahakali. He performed severe tapas and mastered Ashtasiddhis. To please goddess Mahakali, he severed his head eleven times. Each time he cut his head, it was restored by her. Here, goddess Mahakali plays the role of both protector and restorer.

According to Vedic history, Mahakali is the goddess who slew the demon Raktabija.

Raktabija was an asura who performed intense tapas to please Lord Shiva. He granted the demon Raktabija a boon that, during the battle, if any blood touches the ground, it would replicate a new Raktabija of the same strength and form.

This demon had the power to regenerate itself from the blood that fell on the ground. But Maa Kali consumed all the blood to protect the world from danger.

This small yet beautiful temple is constructed using the nagara style of architecture. It is built like a fort-like structure, which is the reason it is called Gadh Kalika Temple; Gadh means fort.

This temple is built in a simple yet elegant style, is a marvel of Indian architecture.

This temple narrates the timeless artistry of skilled craftsmen, featuring massive stone walls with exquisite carvings on pillars.

Lightly lit Garbha-griha adorns the Deity of Mahakali.

Timings: 3:00 AM to 9:00 PM

Kakada Aarti timings: 04:00 AM – 05:00 AM

Maha Aarti timings: 09:00 AM – 10:00 AM

Shayan Aarti timings: 10:00 PM – 11:00 PM
