Birth Of The River Gomati

Gomti River, also known as Gomati, is a sacred river that flows across the state of Uttar Pradesh in the holy land of Bharat. It holds profound spiritual significance in Hinduism.

Gomati River has its origin in Gomat Taal, previously known as Fulhaar jheel, which is located near Madhotanda, Piliphit district, Uttar Pradesh. It is widely known as the river of purity because it cleanses the soul, body, and mind of an individual who takes a bath in this river.

It is one of the most sacred rivers that flows across North India. It flows across the major cities in Uttar Pradesh, serving as a lifeline for the people across its banks.

Devotees flock in huge numbers to have a holy dip in this sacred river on the auspicious days of Ekadashi and Solar Eclipse. According to ancient Sanskrit texts, taking a holy bath in this sacred river is equivalent to taking a bath in the Kurukshetra river. It helps to absolve all the sins committed in the past and helps to attain liberation.

Tracing its origin back to Gomat Taal, it lies close to the foothills of the Himalayas. This sacred river travels a long length of approximately 900 to 960 kilometers before it finally merges with the river Ganga near the village of Kaithi in the Ghazipur district in Uttar Pradesh.

Gomati River is an underground water and monsoon-fed river that flows through major cities, villages, towns, and nourishes people and agriculture across its banks. The river Gomati passes through these places: Pilibhit, Shahjahanpur, Hardoi, Sitapur, Lucknow, Barabanki, Sultanpur, and Jaunpur.

Sai River, Chowka River, Kathina River, and Suru River are the major tributaries of the Gomati River.

According to the sacred verses mentioned in the Purana, the river Gomati is revered as the daughter of the sage Vasishta. She was not born on earth, but out of divine celestial will and ancient wisdom. She was born from the intense divine penance of her father, Vashishta.

As per the episode in the great epic Kampa Ramayana, the river Gomati is associated with the name Kausiki. She was cursed by her husband, Ricika, to turn into a river to follow him when he was going to the deva loka to visit Lord Brahma.

The best time to visit the Gomati River, especially the scenic Gomati Riverfront in Lucknow, is during the cooler months from October to March. This pleasant weather is more suitable for boating, walking, and scenic views.
