Puri, Odisha: Devotees planning to visit the iconic Sri Jagannath Temple in Puri on New Year’s Day should take note, as the temple administration has announced a three-hour suspension of darshan on January 1 to facilitate the uninterrupted performance of sacred rituals.
The Sri Jagannath Temple Administration has announced that the temple will remain closed to devotees from 11 pm on December 31 until 2 am on January 1. With this decision, the long-standing tradition of keeping the shrine open throughout the night for New Year darshan will come to an end.
Temple authorities clarified that the pause in darshan is part of the traditional ‘Pahuda’ ritual, during which Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra are ceremonially put to rest. “Our priority is the smooth conduct of rituals. Devotee convenience is important, but temple traditions cannot be compromised,” officials stated.
The Jagannath Temple, one of Hinduism’s Char Dham pilgrimage sites, witnesses a massive influx of devotees during the New Year. To manage the anticipated rush, the Sri Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) has implemented extensive crowd-control measures, including barricaded queues, enhanced security deployment, and emergency medical facilities.
Authorities have urged devotees to plan their darshan timings carefully and cooperate with temple staff and police personnel. Announcements regarding the reopening of darshan will be made through public address systems and official channels.
The centuries-old Jagannath tradition places supreme importance on ritual discipline, reflecting the living heritage of the temple. Devotees have largely welcomed the decision, acknowledging the spiritual significance of allowing the deities their prescribed rest period.
Pilgrims are advised to follow official updates and adhere strictly to temple guidelines to ensure a peaceful and spiritually enriching New Year visit to Puri.
