What’s Changing: Ticketing, Timings, and Facilities
- Entry to Gundicha Temple will now require a ticket priced at Rs 10 per devotee — a trial-based “ticketed darshan system.”
- Free entry will be provided for children under 5 years, senior citizens above 80, and divyang (differently-abled) devotees.
- Temple timings will be 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM daily. During winter months (November–February), the closing time will be 5:00 PM.
- Entry and exit for devotees will be through the Singhadwara (Lion Gate). Accessibility measures such as ramps will be provided for people with disabilities.
Why Gundicha Temple Matters for Jagannath Devotees
Gundicha Temple holds a deeply revered place in the faith of followers of the deity Jagannath. It is believed to be the birthplace of Jagannath and his siblings — deities worshipped at the main temple in Puri — making this site a sacred pilgrimage destination.
Each year during the famous Rath Yatra, Jagannath along with his siblings travel to Gundicha Temple in their chariots, where they stay for several days before returning to the main temple. This makes Gundicha Temple a central part of Jagannath worship and ritual tradition.
Ahead of reopening, SJTA has implemented significant upgrades: outer premises have been cleared of encroachments, surroundings beautified, and visitor amenities strengthened. The long-term plan is to open Gundicha Temple for devotees throughout the year, not just during Rath Yatra — allowing for regular parikrama (circumambulation) and darshan visits.
What Devotees Should Know — How to Visit Gundicha Temple After Reopening
- Keep Rs 10 ready for ticket purchase (unless exempt as per age/disability).
- Expect improved amenities, accessibility for divyang devotees, and a more organized darshan experience under SJTA.
