Local authorities reported that the force of the floodwaters left residents struggling to safeguard their homes and belongings. Low-lying areas and market zones were the worst affected, with several families displaced overnight.
Rescue and relief operations are currently underway, with teams from the district administration, police, and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) working on a war footing. Temporary shelters have been set up to accommodate affected families, while emergency supplies such as food, water, and medical aid are being distributed.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami instructed officials to stay vigilant and give top priority to rehabilitation measures. “The safety of every citizen is our priority. Relief and rescue work must be carried out swiftly to ensure no one is left unattended,” he stated.
The incident underscores the increasing risk of flash floods and landslides in Uttarakhand during the monsoon season. Experts have long warned that unpredictable weather patterns and intense rainfall are making the fragile Himalayan region more vulnerable to disasters.
In the wake of this natural calamity, Tirtha Yatra, a renowned pilgrimage travel agency, has announced the postponement of its ongoing Char Dham Yatras. Emphasizing the need for pilgrim safety, the agency announced that the yatras will restart in the first week of October, after conditions improve and travel routes are declared safe.
“Safety is always first at Tirtha Yatra. Our priority is to ensure the well-being of our yatris, even if that means rescheduling,” the agency stated. Pilgrims have been advised to stay connected through official updates regarding revised travel schedules.
With continuous rainfall predicted in Uttarkashi over the coming days, authorities have urged residents and pilgrims to exercise caution and avoid venturing near swollen streams and rivers. The state government has assured ongoing monitoring and pledged long-term measures to reduce the impact of recurring floods in the region.
