Rajpur – Birthplace of Goswami Tulsidas

Rajpur is a small and peaceful village that is situated on the banks of the Yamuna River, but its connection with Goswami Tulsidas makes it an important place to visit.

This village in the Chitrakoot region of Uttar Pradesh is the birthplace of Goswami Tulsidas, the great saint who composed the Ramcharitmanas. He brought the history of Lord Rama closer to ordinary people by presenting it in a simple Awadhi language instead of Sanskrit.

Unlike many famous pilgrimage destinations, Rajpur is known for its spiritual heritage rather than grand temples or large crowds. People visit this village to learn about the early life of Tulsidas, offer prayers at his birthplace to receive favour of Sri Ramachandra.

Birth of Goswami Tulsidas

Goswami Tulsidas was born in Rajpur on 1511 to Atmaram Dubey and Hulsi Devi, a respected brahmin couple who were known for their devotion and knowledge.

Traditional biographies mention that Tulsidas remained in his mother’s womb for twelve months and was born with a full set of teeth an unusual sign that surprised everyone and instead of crying, he uttered the name “Rama,” which earned him the childhood name Rambola.

His childhood was filled with difficulties, as he was orphaned at an early age. Later he came under the guidance of the saint Narharidas, who introduced him to the history and super excellent characteristics of Lord Rama, the Vedas, and other Vedic scriptures. Under his guidance, Tulsidas became a respected scholar of Hindu scriptures. These early teachings shaped the spiritual path that would later make him one of the greatest saints of the Bhakti movement.

The Life Journey of Goswami Tulsidas

As a young man Tulsidas married Ratnavali the daughter of Dinbandhu Pathak. He loved his wife deeply and became very attached to her. One day Ratnavali went to her parents house without informing him.

Unable to bear the separation, Tulsidas decided to meet her immediately. Tulsidas crossed the flooded Yamuna River on a stormy night just to meet her. When Ratnavali saw him, she was shocked by the intensity of his attachment. Then Ratnavali said that “If you had the same love for Lord Rama that you have for this body of mine, made only of bones and skin, you would have been freed from the fear of worldly existence and crossed the ocean of birth and death itself.”

These words deeply affected Tulsidas and transformed his life. He immediately gave up worldly life and dedicated himself to Lord Rama.

After becoming a wandering saint,while Tulsidas was traveling, Lord Hanuman appeared before him in Varanasi and guided him on the path of attaining the lotus feet of Sri Rama. Hanuman directed Tulsidas to Chitrakoot. While staying at Chitrakoot, Tulsidas was approached by two beautiful young princes asking him for sandalpaste. Tulsidasadmired them but did not recognize that They were Lord Rama and Lakshmana. Later Hanuman appeared there as a parrot and informed him that the two princes were Lord Rama and Lakshmana.

From that point onward he travelled toAyodhya, Prayagraj, Chitrakoot, and Kashi, preached the message of bhakti, and eventually composed the Ramcharitmanas, making the history of Lord Rama accessible to millions in the Awadhi language.

He also wrote several other devotional works, including the Hanuman Chalisa, Vinay Patrika, Dohavali, Kavitavali, and Gitavali, which remain widely recited even today.

Goswami Tulsidas spent his final years in Kashi (Varanasi), where he continued writing and teaching. He left his earthly body in 1623 at Assi Ghat, leaving behind a spiritual legacy that continues to inspire millions across the world.

Places to Visit in Rajpur

Goswami Tulsidas Janmasthan (Tulsi Mandir / Ramcharitmanas Temple)

This is popularly known as Tulsi Mandir or the Ramcharitmanas Temple. It is the most important religious site in Rajpur, visited by thousands of devotees every year. The temple houses a deity of Goswami Tulsidas. If you visit it during Tulsidas Jayanti or Sri Rama Navami, you will find the temple filled with many devotees.

One of the temple’s greatest treasures is a handwritten manuscript of the Ayodhya Kanda of the Ramcharitmanas, which is written by Goswami Tulsidas himself. Carefully preserved within the temple, this manuscript is regarded as a priceless part of Bharat’s spiritual and literary heritage.

Hanuman Temple

The ancient Hanuman Temple in Rajpur is another revered place. According to traditional belief, Hanuman ji guided Goswami Tulsidas towards the divine darshan of Lord Rama. Although the temple is modest in size, it holds great religious significance for followers of Tulsidas.

Tulsi Ghat

This is situated on the banks of the sacred Yamuna River. According to the Sthala Purana, Tulsidas crossed the flooded Yamuna River from this ghat, to meet his wife, Ratnavali on a stormy night. It’s a peaceful ghat and an important part of the pilgrimage experience.

By Road: Rajpur is well connected by road from Prayagraj as well as Chitrakoot. Buses cruising between Chitrakoot and Prayagraj stop at Rajpur.

Best time to visit Rajpur

Considering the climate, the best time to visit Rajpur is between November and March. Remaining the weather is hot and quite dry. It could be uncomfortable to visit.

Chitrakoot – Chitrakoot is an important stop on the journey of Sri Ramachandra. One can have darshan of lot of Lila-sthalis of Sri Ramachandra here. It will require at least 4 days to see Chitrakoot completely. Generally it is covered in our Ayodhya Ramayana Yatra.
