For the Kedarnath Yatra 2026, the Animal Husbandry Department will launch a special verification drive starting February 26. All horses and mules must undergo mandatory health check-ups, registration, and insurance before the yatra begins. Special camps will operate daily until Holi, with two camps functioning each day.
Authorities have made online payment of insurance premiums compulsory, and cash transactions will not be accepted. Animals without valid medical certificates, insurance, and registration will not be permitted on the Gaurikund–Kedarnath route.
Meanwhile, the Uttarkashi district administration is drafting a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for the Yamunotri Yatra 2026. Under the proposed rules, horses and mules will not be allowed to operate after 6 pm. Strict action will be taken against overloading and animal cruelty under relevant laws. Only 600 animals will be allowed on the Yamunotri track at a time, with rotation permitted after animals return to Janki Chatti.
Veterinary teams will monitor animal health throughout the pilgrimage. Authorities will also ensure arrangements for fodder, hot water, and designated burial sites to maintain hygiene. Officials say these steps will make Char Dham Yatra 2026 safer, more organized, and humane for both pilgrims and animals.
