Mounted on a beautifully adorned golden horse, the Deity—an incarnation of Lord Vishnu—will proceed in a majestic procession from the Alagar Koyil toward the Vaigai River. The procession is accompanied by traditional music, temple rituals, and vibrant cultural displays, creating a festive atmosphere across the city.
The ritual of entering the river, popularly known as “Azhagar Aatril Ezhuntharulal”, symbolizes Lord Kallalagar’s journey to Madurai to attend the celestial wedding of Goddess Meenakshi. According to legend, the Lord arrives late and enters the Vaigai River instead, a moment that devotees eagerly await every year.
Authorities are making elaborate arrangements to manage the large influx of devotees, including crowd control measures, security deployment, and facilities for pilgrims. The event is expected to see lakhs of participants lining the riverbanks to witness the divine spectacle.
The Chithirai Festival, one of Tamil Nadu’s grandest celebrations, beautifully blends devotion, mythology, and cultural heritage. The entry of Lord Kallalagar into the Vaigai River remains its most anticipated highlight, symbolizing faith, tradition, and the enduring spiritual legacy of Madurai.
