Sthala Purana of Sharadamba Devi Temple
According to the traditional accounts associated with Sringeri, the history of the Sharadamba Temple is closely connected with Adi Shankaracharya and his establishment of the Sringeri Sharada Peetham. The tradition links the Goddess with the renowned philosophical debate between Shankaracharya and Mandana Misra. Mandana Misra’s wife, Bharati, is revered in the tradition as an embodiment of Goddess Sarasvati and took part in the debate.
After Shankaracharya successfully responded to the questions posed during the debate, Bharati is said to have granted him a boon. According to tradition, she agreed to remain at Sringeri in the form of Goddess Sharadamba, where Shankaracharya established his monastery.
Sharadamba is worshipped as Jaganmata, the Divine Mother who represents the manifest aspect of Brahman. She is also regarded as Guru-rupini, through whom divine grace and spiritual guidance reach devotees through the Jagadguru.
