How to Celebrate Ugadi at Home

Ugadi is the traditional festival that welcomes the onset of Vasanta Ritu. It is a time to set new goals, spend time with family to strengthen bonds, savour the taste of Ugadi Pachadi, and listen to Panchanga.

Chandramana Ugadi is the new year for those who follow lunar calendar (Chandramana).

On the auspicious occasion of Ugadi 2026, we step into Parabhava Nama Samvatsara with faith and devotion, seeking divine blessings for a year filled with harmony and success.

According to the Vedic Panchagam, Ugadi is celebrated widely on the auspicious day of Chaitra Shukla Padyami. It is the first day in the Shukla Paksha of Chaitra masa. This festival commonly occurs in the month of March or April.

Ugadi marks the joyous arrival of Vasanta Ritu. It is the vibrant and colorful spring season and is termed as the king of all seasons. Thus, it is called Rituraj. This season marks the end of the winter season and welcomes summer. It is the season when trees start to bloom, rejoicing the birds, making them sing, and expressing their joy.

बृहत्साम तथा साम्नां गायत्री छन्दसामहम् ।
मासानां मार्गशीर्षोऽहमृतूनां कुसुमाकरः ॥

According to Chapter 10, Verse 35 of the Bhagavad Gita, Lord Sri Krishna says that He is the Brihatsama of the Sama Veda, the Gayatri among all mantras, Margashirsha among the months, and Vasanta among all the seasons.

Ugadi is a grand and joyous festival celebrated across South India, particularly in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana. It takes different forms in other parts of India. In Maharashtra and Goa, it is celebrated as Gudi Padwa. The Sindhi community observes this day as Cheti Chand, in Manipur it is called Sajibu Nongma Panba, and in Kashmir, it is known as Navreh.

The festival is celebrated not only in India but also abroad. In Bali, Indonesia, it is observed as Nyepi, a day of silence. On this day, everyone stays indoors, all shops remain closed, and no vehicles or flights operate.

Ugadi is an ancient festival, celebrated since the time of the Mahabharata. The word Ugadi is a combination of two Sanskrit words, yuga and adi. Yuga can be translated to “age” and adi means “beginning.” Therefore, Ugadi signifies the advent of a new era, bringing fresh hopes, blessings for wealth, good harvests, and success.

This auspicious occasion marks the beginning of Vasantha Navaratri, a sacred nine-day festival dedicated to the worship of Goddess Durga in her various divine forms. Throughout these nine days, devotees offer prayers and perform special rituals seeking her blessings.

Ramayana Navaha is observed for nine days starting from Ugadi. On the ninth day with Sri Rama Navami, which celebrates the birth of Lord Sri Ramachandra. The festivities conclude on the tenth day, Dashami, with the grand ceremony of Sri Rama Pattabhisheka (the coronation of Lord Rama), commemorated with devotion and joy.

Since it is a major festival for the people of Karnataka, Hyderabad and Andhra Pradesh, preparations begin at least a week in advance. The entire house is thoroughly cleaned, and all unwanted or waste items are discarded.

On the day of Ugadi, the women and girls of the house decorate the home. They draw beautiful rangoli or muggulu in the front yard and embellish them with vibrant colors and flower petals. They also make torans using fresh mango leaves, which are beautifully tied and placed above the main door, creating a festive atmosphere.

On the day of Ugadi, one should wake up before sunrise and perform Abhyanga Snana (an oil bath).

Dressing in new or traditional attire symbolizes renewal, prosperity, and respect for the festive spirit. Ladies wear beautiful, colorful sarees, while young girls wear half sarees or salwar suits. Men wear dhotis.

Ugadi Pachadi is made of six main ingredients: neem flowers, jaggery, tamarind, green chilli, salt, and raw mango. Each ingredient represents a different phase of life, such as challenges, sweetness, surprise, anger, fear, and excitement. It serves as a reminder to accept life in all its forms in the coming year.

Every house has a separate puja room. Clean the puja room and wash the puja utensils thoroughly. Apply turmeric, kumkum, and sandalwood paste to the photo or vigraha. Then decorate it with fresh, fragrant flowers or a flower garland. Light a ghee diya, incense sticks, and camphor.

Offer your prayers to your family deity and other gods, seeking blessings for good health, success, and prosperity.

Panchangam Shravanam is the most significant aspect of Ugadi. In many households, the elders of the family read the Panchangam, and the other family members listen attentively. It is also conducted at temples or broadcast online for devotees to follow.

Women of the house start the preparation for the Ugadi feast. They prepare various delicious items like Chitranna, Holige (Bobbatlu), Payasa, Kosambari, Vegetable curries, fried items and Mango Dal/Mamidikaya Pappu.

Enjoy the delicious meal with your family. Visit elders and take their blessings. Share sweets and prasadam with friends and relatives to strengthen the bonds.
