Centuries-Old Tradition Maintained
According to long-standing temple customs, the Rawal of Kedarnath is selected exclusively from the Veerashaiva Lingayat community. Shivacharya Kedar Ling’s appointment continues this sacred tradition, ensuring the preservation of authentic Vedic rituals and Shaivite practices at Kedarnath Dham.
Significance of the Rawal of Kedarnath
The Rawal of Kedarnath holds immense spiritual authority and is responsible for performing daily pujas, special rituals during Maha Shivaratri, and other major ceremonies dedicated to Lord Shiva. The role is deeply spiritual and central to the temple’s religious functioning.
Kedarnath Temple and Char Dham Yatra
Located in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand, Kedarnath Temple is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva and a vital part of the Char Dham Yatra. Situated at an altitude of over 11,000 feet, the shrine remains inaccessible during winter due to extreme weather conditions, yet attracts lakhs of pilgrims every year during the yatra season.
The temple is traditionally believed to have been established by the Pandavas and later revived by Adi Shankaracharya, strengthening its spiritual and historical significance.
Devotees Welcome the Appointment
With Shivacharya Kedar Ling’s elevation as the 325th Rawal, preparations for the upcoming Kedarnath Yatra are expected to gain momentum. Devotees view this appointment as the continuation of an unbroken spiritual lineage that has guided Kedarnath Dham for centuries, reinforcing its position as one of India’s most revered pilgrimage sites.
