Mahalakshmi Temple, Kolhapur

The Mahalakshmi Temple is one of the most revered and ancient Shakti Peethas, located in the sacred city of Kolhapur, in the Indian state of Maharashtra. Nestled on the banks of the Panchganga River, this divine site is believed to be the abode of Goddess Mahalakshmi, who is worshipped as the goddess of health, wealth, prosperity, and peace. Locals affectionately refer to her as Aai Ambabai.

She is also known by various names, such as Karaveera Mahalakshmi, Lakshmi Bhavani, and Ambabai.

Mahalakshmi Temple is not just a religious monument—it is the spiritual heart of devotion, infinite power, strength, and wisdom for over a millennium. Devotees visit this temple to seek the divine grace of Goddess Mahalakshmi, who is believed to fulfill all wishes and bless her devotees with both bhukti (worldly pleasures) and mukti (spiritual liberation).

Devotees of Mahalakshmi are not limited to India; she is worshipped by followers across the globe. A visit to this temple is said to bring a sense of pure bliss, harmony, and tranquility.

It is believed that visiting this temple offers the same spiritual merit as visiting Kashi. Moreover, since Goddess Mahalakshmi resides in Kolhapur and Lord Venkateshwara in Tirupati, a pilgrimage to Tirupati is considered incomplete without visiting Kolhapur.

Many great personalities, including Sri Adi Shankaracharya and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, have paid homage at this sacred site.

The Kolhapur Shakti Peetha holds exceptional religious importance. It is considered one of the six sacred places where devotees can either attain liberation from worldly desires or have their deepest wishes fulfilled.

According to one legend, Sage Bhrigu once visited Vaikuntha to seek the darshan of Lord Vishnu. However, Lord Vishnu did not acknowledge his arrival. Angered by this, Sage Bhrigu kicked Lord Vishnu on the chest. Feeling insulted and disrespected, Goddess Lakshmi left Vaikuntha and chose to reside in Kolhapur.

Another legend tells of Devi Mahalakshmi slaying the demon Kolhasur, who was tormenting sages and common people. As he lay dying, Kolhasur requested that the place be named after him—thus, the city came to be known as Kolhapur.

Constructed during the reign of the Chalukya Empire, the temple is constructed using the Hemadpanti style of architecture. The walls of the temple are beautifully adorned with intricate carvings, stone sculptures, and vivacious decorations. It is a visual delight, and its architectural grandeur is admired far beyond the borders of India.

The garbhagriha of the temple houses the magnificent Deity of Mahalakshmi, which is sculpted from monolithic black stone. The Deity of Mahalakshmi is depicted with four arms, is adorned with precious jewels and diamonds.

Navaratri: It is a major festival celebrated with grandeur. Thousands of devotees flock to this temple during this festive season to get the darshan of the goddess and seek her blessings. The goddess is beautifully decorated with various jewels and attires.

Kiranotsav: On the auspicious day of Magh Maas, the golden rays of the sun fall directly on the deity of Mahalakshmi. This phenomenon occurs over three days: on the first day, the rays illuminate the face of the goddess; on the second day, they fall upon her chest; and on the third day, they reach her feet.

Mahalakshmi Temple performs various aartis throughout the day. The timings are as follows:
Morning Kakad Aarti: 4:30 AM to 6:00 AM
Evening Aarti: 4:00 PM to 10:00 PM

Morning: 6:00 AM to 2:30 PM
Evening: 4:00 PM to 10:00 PM
