The Omkareshwar blood donation campaign has significantly increased blood collection in the district, helping local hospitals maintain adequate supplies while supporting neighbouring districts facing shortages. According to health officials, the Khandwa blood bank now collects around 150 units of blood every week, creating a surplus that has been shared with districts such as Betul, Dhar, Burhanpur, Barwani, and Harda.
Authorities said the initiative aims to promote awareness about voluntary blood donation while utilizing the large number of pilgrims who visit Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga, one of the twelve sacred Jyotirlingas dedicated to Lord Shiva. The campaign has also helped build reserves of rare blood groups, ensuring better preparedness during medical emergencies.
The ongoing Adhik Maas (Purushottam Maas) has further boosted participation, as many devotees consider charitable acts especially auspicious during this holy period. Under the scheme, eligible donors receive VIP access to the temple, allowing them to bypass long queues for darshan.
Officials believe the program is a successful example of combining religious tourism and public healthcare. With blood donations continuing to rise, authorities are now exploring plans to expand blood storage facilities and strengthen healthcare infrastructure in the region.
