Sthala Purana of Mangala Gowri Temple
According to Pauranic history, Sati, also known as Dakshayani, was the beloved daughter of King Daksha. Once King Daksha organized a grand yagna, he invited all prominent personalities except Lord Shiva and Sati Devi.
Sati Devi wanted to attend the yagna conducted by her father, Daksha, and requested Lord Shiva to grant her permission. Though Lord Shiva denied it, she attended the yagna. But King Daksha insulted Lord Shiva in front of everyone. Unable to bear the insult, she created the fire from within the body and gave up her life.
When Lord Shiva learned of Sati’s death, he was devastated and consumed by grief. He lifted her burning body and began performing the Tandava, the cosmic dance of destruction.
Fearing the destruction of the universe, Lord Vishnu used his Sudarshan Chakra to cut Sati’s body into 51 pieces. These pieces fell in different parts of the Indian subcontinent, and the place where they fell is called Shakti Peetha—a sacred seat of Goddess Shakti.
Architecture of Mangala Gowri Temple
This magisterial, tiny but powerful temple is located atop Mangalagiri hills. The temple is accessible by a flight of at least fifty stairs with no other alternative to reach the temple. The flight of stairs lead to an open and wide courtyard in the other end of which is a tiny temple of Mother Mangala Gowri. Inside this tiny temple, there is a cave like Garbha-griha housing the divine pindis. The temple can hardly accommodate 4 yatris at once.
Though no one knows about the original architecture of the temple, today the temple stands in the contemporary architectural style. Most of the temples in Gaya were broken by the Muslim invaders. These temples are still hoping for their glorious days of renovation and grand make-up.
In the same courtyard, one can have darshan of parivara Deities such as Hanuman Ji, Ganesha, Kali Maa, and Lord Shiva.

There are no direct flights to Gaya from many cities. It’s better to reach Varanasi by Air, have Viswanath darshan and catch Vande Bharat for Gaya.

We were blessed to have visited this temple in 2023. It was raining and dark in the evening. But, Thanks to my sister’s husband’s meticulous planning, myself and my sister lit 2 Kamakshi amman Lamps inside the cave temple, which we have to practically crawl and go inside but once inside, we can stand. With the mobile light, we were able to see the pindis and the carvings on the wall.
Reading your detailed descriptions and sering the photos took me back to my visit.
Thank you so much.
