The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) is reportedly preparing a plan to erect a 600-foot-tall statue of Lord Rama in the town of temple town of Vontimitta, with the idol proposed to be installed in the Kalyani adjacent to Sri Kodandarama Temple.
A master plan for the project has been drafted by the School of Planning & Architecture, Vijayawada, and submitted to relevant authorities for the approval. The broader vision is to transform Vontimitta into a major spiritual tourism hub over the next three decades, anticipating a significant rise in pilgrim footfall.
Under the proposal, the temple’s Kalyani will be landscaped and beautified, and supporting infrastructure—including pathways, devotee amenities, and connectivity enhancements—will be developed in tandem. Proponents of the plan believe that the monumental statue will help place Vontimitta alongside India’s major pilgrimage destinations.
However, the project is currently at a proposal stage. It must clear multiple hurdles—such as structural feasibility, environmental clearances, heritage sensitivities, and funding approval—before construction can begin.
If realized, the 600-foot monument would become one of the tallest statues of Lord Rama in the world and could reshape Vontimitta’s identity as a centre of religious tourism.
