TIRUVANNAMALAI: The temple town of Tiruvannamalai is preparing for an extraordinary influx of devotees as the Karthigai Deepam 2025 festival reaches its grand climax with the lighting of the Maha Deepam atop the sacred 2,668-ft Annamalai Hill. Considered one of the holiest events in Tamil Nadu, the festival draws millions of pilgrims from across India and abroad.
This year, temple authorities and district officials have intensified arrangements to ensure smooth crowd management, security, and uninterrupted darshan. Additional transport services, medical camps, drinking water facilities, and special queues have been put in place to handle the massive gathering expected during the Maha Deepam lighting ceremony.
The Bharani Deepam, marking the traditional beginning of Karthigai Deepam, will be followed by the spectacular moment when the giant earthen lamp—filled with ghee and topped with a towering wick—is lit at the hill’s summit. Visible from several kilometers away, this sacred flame symbolizes the eternal light of Lord Arunachaleswarar, believed to represent the Agni (fire) form of Lord Shiva.
Devotees undertake Girivalam, the 14-km barefoot circumambulation of the holy hill, seeking spiritual merit, blessings, and inner purification. Shops, mutts, and ashrams along the route are gearing up to accommodate the continuous flow of pilgrims throughout the night.
Local businesses, including hotels and restaurants, are witnessing a festive boom, with occupancy at near-full capacity. Authorities have advised visitors to follow safety guidelines, arrive early, and utilize public transport to avoid congestion.
With devotion at its peak and the sacred hill glowing under the radiant Maha Deepam, Tiruvannamalai is set to welcome one of its most significant spiritual gatherings of the year.
