Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh: In a major push to boost religious and spiritual tourism, authorities have drafted a roadmap to restore ancient temples and riverfront ghats across the district. Known for its rich cultural and mythological heritage, Prayagraj is set for transformation under a new heritage conservation initiative, officials said. According to Regional Tourism Officer Aparajita Singh, proposals have been sent to the state government to develop one major tourism site in each of the 12 assembly constituencies, with funding of ₹1–1.25 crore each. The project aims to revive Prayagraj’s spiritual identity and enhance its appeal as a key pilgrimage hub in Uttar Pradesh.
Key Temple Development Proposals Under Prayagraj’s Heritage Restoration Plan
Under the new tourism roadmap, several ancient temples across Prayagraj’s urban and rural constituencies have been shortlisted for restoration, beautification, and infrastructure development. The proposals include:
Urban Region:
- Allahabad North: Geeta Niketan Temple, Alopibagh – proposed for development and beautification.
- Allahabad South: Bholegiri Temple – selected for restoration and improvement of temple surroundings.
- Allahabad West: Ancient Shiva Temple, Fatehpur Ghat – to undergo major renovation and heritage conservation.
Trans-Ganga Region:
- Baharia: Shivalaya Temple, Uddhavpur Khagiya – proposed for structural restoration and cultural revival.
- Soraon: Durga Temple, Panchdevra – to be developed as a local spiritual attraction.
- Phulpur: Indriya Dham, Jamunipur Kotwa – identified for beautification and improved visitor facilities.
- Handia: Kundoura Mahadev Dham – slated for development under the heritage tourism plan.
- Bibipur: Ancient Shiva Temple – to receive upgrades for accessibility and preservation.
Trans-Yamuna Region:
- Meja: Sarveshwar Temple, Ramnagar – chosen for heritage enhancement and promotion of rural tourism.
- Koraon: Subhash’s Shiva Temple – to be restored with improved infrastructure for devotees.
- Karchhana: Falhari Baba Temple – included in the beautification and development list.
- Bara: Mahadevalaya Temple, Chhidi – proposed for renovation and improved facilities.
Officials expressed optimism that this ambitious project will:
- Preserve and promote Prayagraj’s ancient cultural heritage
- Boost tourism and local economic growth
- Create new employment opportunities
- Foster pride in the district’s spiritual and historical legacy
Once approved, the initiative is expected to transform Prayagraj into a model city for sustainable heritage tourism in Uttar Pradesh.
