GAYA, Bihar — As the observance of Pitru Paksha gains momentum across Bharat, unconfirmed reports are surfacing that His Excellency Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to visit Gaya on September 17, 2025, to perform Pind Daan for his deceased mother, Heeraben Modi.
The proposed date coincides with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 75th birthday, and aligns with a period when thousands of devotees converge on Gaya — particularly at key sites like the Vishnupad Temple and the banks of the Falgu River — to carry out rituals for departed ancestors.
Government and BJP sources say preparations are underway in Gaya to accommodate a large gathering, enhance security, and make ritual arrangements smoother — though official confirmation of PM Modi’s ritual participation is pending.
The blending of spiritual engagement and public ritual is seen by some as reinforcing his personal image and connection with cultural traditions of Bharat and Sanatana Dharma. This will also boost religious tourism in the sacred city of Gaya ji. If the reports hold, PM Modi’s prospective visit to Gaya to perform Pind Daan for his mother would deepen the intersection of faith, tradition, and politics—as has been common during Pitru Paksha. It could also underscore the continuing role of spiritual rituals in public life.
Pind Daan is an ancient Hindu rite in which offerings — traditionally balls of rice and barley — are made for one’s ancestors. It is believed that this ritual helps departed souls attain peace. The Vishnupad Temple, with its sacred footprint said to belong to Lord Vishnu, along with the ghats of the Falgu River and the Akshay Vat tree, are among the most venerated locations for this ceremony in Gaya.
During Pitru Paksha, a fortnight in the lunar calendar dedicated to honoring deceased ancestors, pilgrims flock to Gaya from across India, as well as abroad, to perform these rituals.
