Odisha Government Bans Non-vegetarian Food and Liquor near Puri Jagannatha Temple
The Odisha Government has taken a commendable step to completely prohibit the sale of non-vegetarian food and liquor within a 2 km radius of the renowned Jagannatha Temple in Puri, Odisha. This comprehensive measure aims to preserve the sanctity of the holy dham.
On Sunday, June 8, 2025, Law Minister Prithviraj Harischandra announced, “No liquor shops or bars will be authorized to sell liquor on the Grand Road or Bada Danda that connects Sri Mandir to Gundicha Temple. Additionally, there will be no eateries selling meat and fish on the Grand Road.”
However, the Law Minister did not specify the exact date when the law will be enforced, as it is still in the planning phase.
Many shopkeepers may need to relocate their businesses once the new rule is implemented. Nearly 70 shops selling meat, fish, eggs, and other animal products will have to move, ensuring the entire Grand Road is free from non-vegetarian food. The concerns of the vendors will be considered before finalizing the plan.
This move was enthusiastically received by Debasis Das, secretary of Sri Kshetra Swabhiman Mancha. “The presence of liquor and non-vegetarian food was a significant concern for many devotees of Lord Jagannatha. It caused major distractions in the spiritual path of devotees and the temple administration. This long-awaited move will enhance the spiritual ambiance of the temple,” he said.
Many other devotees also appreciated the decision taken by the state government. Binayak Dasmohapatra, Chhatisa Nijog servitor of Jagannatha Temple, embraced the decision and raised concerns about intoxicated visitors at the shrine.
