Maha Shivaratri is an auspicious day dedicated to the worship of Lord Shiva, observed with fasting and staying awake throughout the night in devotion and prayer.
Maha Shivaratri is traditionally observed on Krishna Paksha Chaturdashi of Phalguna Masa.
This sacred day marks the occasion when Lord Shiva consumed poison to save the world.
To seek the blessings of Lord Shiva, devotees observe a fast, sing devotional bhajans, and remain awake throughout the night.
The Panchakshari mantra “Namah Shivaya” is chanted continuously in temples throughout the day.
Keep the following items ready before the puja

Asana (seat) to sit on during the puja.

Panchamrita Abhisheka items — milk, curd, ghee, honey, and sugar.

Preparation Before Shivaratri
Preparations begin the week before Shivaratri. Cleaning the house is the first step towards celebrating Shivaratri.
Early Morning Bath
On the day of Shivaratri, all the devotees of Lord Shiva should wake up early in the morning and take a bath. This will cleanse the body and mind. Wear clean clothes to boost your energy. It is also advisable to take a bath in the Ganges or other holy rivers.
Setting the Altar
After bathing, choose a clean and tidy place for the Shiva Puja. Clean the area properly, set up the altar, and place the Shiva Linga on it.
Take the Vow to Fast (Sankalpa)
Devotees who wish to observe a fast for the entire day stand before Lord Shiva and seek His blessings to complete it. Some prefer a strict nirjala fast, while others consume fruits, milk, or juice according to their physical comfort or medical condition.
Abhishekam
Lord Shiva is the most compassionate deity who accepts simple offerings such as water, Bilva leaves, and vibhuti. He accepts anything that is offered with pure devotion.
Performing abhishekam on this day is considered highly auspicious. Offer abhishekam using Panchamrita—milk, curd, honey, sugar, and ghee. You may also perform Jal Abhishekam (offering of water), which easily pleases Lord Shiva. While performing abhishekam to Lord Shiva, chant “Namah Shivaya” and the “Rudram Chamakam” to experience the divine presence of the Lord.
Aarti and Prasad
Light a diya with ghee or sesame oil and incense sticks, perform the aarti of Lord Shiva, and present fruits, sweets, or homemade prasad as an offering. Afterwards, distribute the prasad among your family members.
Breaking the Fast
The fast is traditionally broken the next morning after taking a bath and offering prayers to Lord Shiva.
Performing the Shiva puja at home fosters a sense of peace, purity, and spiritual fulfillment. It strengthens devotion, deepens inner awareness, and invites divine grace into the household. Regular worship of Lord Shiva helps cultivate patience, compassion, and self-discipline, creating a positive and sacred atmosphere for the entire family.
