Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the redeveloped 524-year-old Tripura Sundari Temple in Gomati, Tripura, marking a significant moment in India’s cultural and spiritual heritage. The historic temple, one of the 51 revered Shakti Peethas, has undergone extensive redevelopment to enhance its infrastructure while preserving its centuries-old sanctity.
Located in Udaipur, Gomati district, the Tripura Sundari Temple is a major pilgrimage site dedicated to Goddess Tripura Sundari, also worshipped as ‘Maa Tripureshwari.’ Built in 1501 CE by Maharaja Dhanya Manikya, the temple is often referred to as the “Koil of Tripura” and is considered one of the holiest shrines in Eastern India.
The redevelopment project includes upgraded facilities for pilgrims, improved pathways, enhanced lighting, water conservation systems, and new amenities to accommodate the large number of devotees who visit the temple during festivals, particularly Diwali Mela, when thousands gather to seek blessings.
Speaking at the inauguration, PM Modi emphasized the government’s commitment to preserving India’s ancient temples and spiritual centers. He highlighted that redeveloping heritage sites not only strengthens cultural pride but also promotes religious tourism, boosting local economies. The project is part of the broader effort to link faith, tradition, and modern infrastructure, ensuring devotees have both spiritual fulfillment and comfort during their pilgrimage.
The Tripura Sundari Temple holds immense religious significance as it is believed to be the place where the toe of Goddess Sati fell, making it a sacred Shakti Peetha. The deity of Goddess Tripura Sundari, also known as “Soroshi”, is unique as it is in the form of a 5-foot-tall idol of the goddess seated on a lotus, holding divine weapons.
With its redevelopment, the temple is expected to attract not only pilgrims from across India, but also international visitors interested in exploring the state’s rich cultural heritage. The initiative reflects India’s growing focus on spiritual tourism, with the Tripura Sundari Temple in Gomati poised to become a global center of faith and devotion.
