Advocates argue that if strict measures can be enforced in Ayodhya, similar regulations should apply in Puri, particularly around the Bada Danda, the sea beach, and other sacred areas. Devotees believe that enforcing a non-veg ban and restricting alcohol sales will enhance the spiritual atmosphere, maintain public decorum, and ensure a comfortable experience for pilgrims visiting the Lord Jagannath Temple.
The demand also recalls a promise made by Odisha’s Law Minister last year to declare certain areas of Puri non-vegetarian and alcohol-free, which remains unfulfilled according to several temple authorities. Senior servitors and mahants have expressed concern over the open sale of meat and alcoholic beverages near religious sites, stating that it undermines the devotional environment of the holy city.
Local authorities and the Puri Municipality have indicated that action will follow once clear government directives are issued. Experts say that formally implementing a non-veg ban and promoting Puri as an alcohol-free holy city could set a benchmark for other religious towns in India, balancing spiritual preservation with modern urban management.
With millions of devotees visiting annually, advocates stress that these measures are crucial to maintaining the sacred identity of Puri and ensuring that pilgrims enjoy a safe, serene, and spiritually enriching experience.
