Lathmar Holi festivities begin nearly a week before the main event in Barsana and Nandgaon. The Braj region gradually comes alive with devotional songs, temple rituals, cultural programs, and vibrant gatherings leading up to the highlight days.
In 2026, while the principal Lathmar celebrations will be held on February 25 in Barsana and February 26 in Nandgaon, preparations and related festivities start about a week earlier. Shrines devoted to Radha and Krishna organize special rituals, floral Holi celebrations, and cultural programs, attracting large numbers of pilgrims and visitors.
The week-long build-up includes events like Laddoo Holi and Phoolon Ki Holi, creating a festive atmosphere across the Braj belt well before the famous stick-play ritual takes place.
The tradition recreates the legendary tale of Radha and Krishna, reflecting Krishna’s playful visit to Radha’s village. As part of the ritual, men from Nandgaon arrive in Barsana attempting to apply colors to the women, who respond by mock-beating them with sticks while the men protect themselves using shields. Those who are caught may be humorously dressed in women’s attire and asked to dance, adding to the festive spirit.
The celebration highlights the affectionate teasing and vibrant cultural traditions of the Braj region. The atmosphere is energetic and colorful, filled with devotional songs, traditional music, and festive drinks like thandai.
Apart from the iconic Lathmar festivities, the region also hosts other unique Holi events such as Laddoo Holi, Phoolon Ki Holi, and Widow Holi, each adding its own charm to the grand Braj Holi celebrations.
