June 17, 2025 | Srinagar — In a major decision aimed at tightening security for the upcoming Amarnath Yatra, the Jammu and Kashmir government has declared the entire pilgrimage route a no-fly zone for 2025. This includes a complete suspension of helicopter services for pilgrims, marking a significant shift in the way the annual yatra has been conducted in recent years.
The ban, which will be in force from July 1 to August 10, covers all aerial activity—helicopters, drones, UAVs, paragliders, and even recreational balloons—except those specifically used for medical emergencies and government-authorized surveillance. The decision was taken following recommendations from the Union Ministry of Home Affairs in light of increasing aerial threats and a recent terror attack near Pahalgam that claimed 26 lives earlier this year.
Traditionally, helicopter services have been a popular choice for pilgrims unable to undertake the physically demanding trek to the Amarnath cave shrine. With their suspension, devotees will now be required to use the conventional trekking routes from Pahalgam and Baltal, relying on ponies, palkis, or on foot. Officials have advised yatris to prepare for a more rigorous journey and ensure proper medical fitness and registration before beginning the yatra.
Security agencies are implementing a multi-layered protective mechanism across the route. Over 581 companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) will be deployed, alongside bomb disposal squads, K9 units, facial recognition systems, and extensive CCTV surveillance. Advanced drone monitoring and communication jammers will be active throughout the yatra corridor to prevent unauthorized aerial activity.
The annual Amarnath Yatra is scheduled to begin on July 3 and conclude on August 9, with lakhs of devotees expected to undertake the sacred journey to the Himalayan cave shrine housing the naturally formed ice lingam of Lord Shiva. This year, the pilgrimage spans 38 days.
A senior government official stated, “The no-fly order is a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of the pilgrims. Given the sensitive situation in the region and the evolving nature of threats, the government is committed to a secure and peaceful yatra.”
As devotees gear up for one of the most revered pilgrimages in India, authorities are calling for patience and cooperation, urging yatris to abide by new protocols and stay updated with official advisories for a smooth and safe experience.
