During the 17th century, the King of Mewar, Maharana Jagat Singh I had a divine dream of Lord Vishnu. In his dream, Lord Vishnu instructed him to construct a grand temple in Udaipur. And said that the Lord should be worshipped in the form of Lord Jagannatha, the Lord of the Universe. As per His instruction, construction of the temple began around 1651 and was completed in 1653 CE.

This magnificent, gigantic, and highly artistically skilled Jagadish Temple was built by none other than the greatest King of Mewar, Maharana Jagat Singh I, in 1651. In those years, he raised a huge amount of 1.5 million for the construction of this temple. It was a very big amount during the 17th century.

This temple is a three-storied structure that illustrates the skilled craftsmanship of Rajasthani artisans. Their dedication, devotion, and hard work paved the way for this awe-inspiring structure.

The soaring high 79ft Shikhara touching the sky is the highlight of the temple architecture. The walls of the temple are adorned with beautifully sculpted images of celestial beings, dancers, musicians, elephants, and more.

Inside the peaceful Sanctum, there is a beautiful Deity of Lord Jagadish, who is the Lord of the entire world. ‘Jagat’ means World, and ‘isha’ means Lord.

Also, there are other Deities like Lord Ganesh Ji, Bhagwan Shiva Ji, Surya Deva, and Goddess Shakti.

To have the darshan of Lord Jagdish, one needs to climb 32 marble steps leading to a peaceful, spacious garbhagriha. At the entrance of the main temple, there is a brass Deity of Garuda.

Annakut Mahotsav: It is a major festival celebrated after Diwali. Also known as Annakuta Festival, falls in the Karthik month. The temple is grandly decorated with flowers and lights. On this auspicious day, 56 varieties of food items are offered to Lord Jagdish, expressing gratitude. On this day, the temple is filled with festive spirit, including bhajan-kirtan, shank Naad (blowing of conch), and sounds of bells.

Holi: This is a festival of colors, celebrated in the holy month of Phalgun. Celebrations begin one month before with Bhajan nights.

Ratha Yatra: It is one of the major festivals celebrated in this temple, since Lord Jagdish is worshiped as Lord Jagannatha. The Deity is paraded through Udaipur city. During the processions, music and folk dance like Ghoomar/Kalbeliya enhance the festive mood. Chariots, elephants, and even horses are decorated. Devotees participate in bhajans, aartis, and traditional street markets.

Janmashtami: It is a major festival celebrating the birth of Lord Sri Krishna. Special aarti is performed at 6 AM, 12 PM, and 7 PM. The place is filled with devotional music, kirtan, and bhakti.

The darshan timings of Jagadish Temple are as follows:

Morning: 4:30 AM to 1:00 PM
Evening: 5:00 to 8:00 PM

Sandhya Aarti: 6:30 to 7:45 PM

Shayana Aarti: 8:15 to 8:45 PM

The best time to visit Jagdish temple is the winter season, i.e., October, November, December, January, February, and March as well. At this time, the cold and pleasant weather eases the occasional tiredness of sightseeing around the temple as well as the city.
