TIRUMALA – On January 4, 2026, devotees and priests gathered at Tirumala Srivari Sannadhi to witness the Sri Swami Malayappan Pranaya Kalaha Mahotsavam, a unique festival honoring Lord Malayappa Swamy and His consorts, Sridevi and Bhudevi. Known as the Divine Love Quarrel Festival, it symbolizes marital harmony through a playful enactment of a “love quarrel” between the deities.
Rituals and Festivities
The Mahotsavam featured elaborate rituals, Vedic chants, homams, and ceremonial offerings. Devotees from across India participated, seeking blessings for peace, prosperity, and family well-being. Temple authorities ensured smooth darshan and engagement for all attendees.
The Divine Love Quarrel
Step 1 – Procession: The deities of Lord Malayappa Swamy and His consorts are taken out in separate palanquins, moving in opposite directions along the temple’s Mada streets, marking the beginning of the festival.
Step 2 – Playful Quarrel: The deities meet at a pre-determined spot, where priests symbolically take sides, engaging in a fun, ceremonial dispute and playfully throwing flower balls at each other to depict the “love quarrel.”
Step 3 – Ninda Stuthi Recitation: Priests chant verses from the Alwar Divya Prabandham in the Ninda Stuthi style, expressing the perspectives of the Lord and His consorts through devotional poetry.
Step 4 – Reconciliation: After the playful quarrel, the Lord reconciles with His consorts, and all three return to the temple together, symbolizing unity, harmony, and marital love.
Significance and Timing
Held annually on the sixth day after Vaikunta Ekadasi, usually in late December or early January, this festival preserves Tirumala’s ritualistic heritage while creating a spiritually vibrant spectacle for devotees.
